The town of St. Andrews in Scotland is famous for being the birthplace of golf, but did you know that our club was the catalyst for Beach Grove and the community it is today?
In 1927 the area was farmland, principally owned by a German immigrant, turned sheep farmer, by the name of Jacob Grauer. It was in 1927 that a developer by the name of Joseph Morris saw the potential for the area and approached Grauer with a proposition to acquire the land. The Beach Grove community of today was the product of Morris’ vision as he planned the winding roads that followed the contours along Boundary Bay’s shoreline. To attract buyers to the proposed development the original nine hole golf course was built on the grounds between 12th and 16th Avenues, Gillespie and Hunter Roads. Unfortunately, Joseph Morris’ grand vision became a victim of the 1929 stock market crash...but the golf course continued on.
In 1929, Beach Grove Golf Club was established, through an arrangement to lease the existing golf course. Club operations were moved to an old 10’ by 10’ gas station located where the current 10th tee is, and all club functions were held in the "old green shack" until 1965. As the economy recovered from recession, the club membership continued to grow boosted by a sudden surge of golfers who were of service men and women from the Boundary Bay air base in World War II. When the Massey Tunnel opened in 1959, the Club grew even more rapidly causing the golf course to expanded to its present day 18 holes.
In January 1980 the club hired a part-time clubhouse attendant who was still in high school, that person is still with the Club as the Golf Course Superintendent, Ian Murray. In September 1999 a new, and current, clubhouse was opened for business.
As we move into our 93rd year as a golf club, and soon, our 100th Anniversary, one can see why our sense of history is strongly tied to the Beach Grove and Tsawwassen communities. Throughout the years, this gem of a course in Tsawwassen has played host to international and local tournaments and remains one of the best golf courses in BC enjoyed by Members and Guests alike.
